Curse of the Crimson Throne
Government
The city of Korvosa has stood for three hundred years, gradually accumulating laws, regulations, and restrictions that are overseen by a bewildering array of officers. For its first two centuries, Korvosa operated as a colony of Cheliax. After the sundering of the Empire, city leaders established a monarchy to provide stability at home—while all the while still pledging allegiance to distant, disinterested Cheliax.
- The Monarchy: The royal house of Arabasti has ruled Korvosa for more than a century, but continues to suffer from the so-called Curse of the Crimson Throne. As a recent addition to the city government, the monarchy’s powers are circumscribed by law and custom.
- Seneschal of Castle Korvosa: Sometimes known as the second most powerful person in the city, the Seneschal oversees the operations of the Castle, is the ultimately authority over the Sable Company Marines, and has the power to expel the monarch from the Crimson Throne.
- Nobility: The Five Great Houses of Korvosa maintain substantial influence over city affairs, while the lesser houses also enjoy numerous privileges.
- Bureaucracy: Korvosa is overflowing with bureaucrats, from the magistrates and arbiters down to the lowliest tariff inspectors.
